The Article 6.2 of the Government program of the Republic of Armenia applies completely to the Energy Sector.

6.2 THE ENERGY SECTOR

The Government policy on the Energy sector is aimed at improving energy independence and security, consolidating the process of regional integration, sustainable development of the sector  relying on the rightful and efficient use of local primary (renewable) energy resources, further development of nuclear energy, diversification of energy supply and introduction of energy efficient and new technologies.

At present, the energy system fully meets the demand of the domestic electricity market and has the potential to increase energy export. Based on the needs of the domestic market, to promote investment and utilize trade opportunities with Georgia and Iran, the RA Government will take upon:

  • The establishment of Energy Sector strategic development routes;
  • The stage-by-stage liberalization of the electricity market of RA, as well as the search for new energy markets in the region, and achieving energy independence through active import-export policy;
  • The formation of legislative incentives for the introduction of innovative high technologies, the enactment of public policy on the development of the energy sector  ensuring the implementation of energy efficiency measures;
  • The extension and modernization of the Armenian NPP Second Generation Unit Operation Term, which will ensure the effective and safe operation of the Power Plant at an additional exploitation period;
  • The development of a new nuclear power unit construction project in the Republic of Armenia taking into consideration the energy security and independence level of the Republic, as well as the importance of knowledge-based direction of the energy sector;
  • Implementation of Iran-Armenia and Armenia-Georgia 400 kW power transmission lines to ensure regional integration.After completion of the construction and commissioning of the above-mentioned highways, the Republic of Armenia will act as a regional hub for the energy sector, linking the energy systems of Iran, Georgia and Russia;
  • Efficient use and promotion of renewable energy sources.

Evaluating the power system regimes and capacity, competition-based projects of industrial solar power plants will be implemented, increasing their share in total domestic energy consumption to at least 10% until 2020.
